Las Fallas, 15th to 19th March 2019
Possibly one of the brightest and liveliest springtime festivals, Las Fallas is a unique celebration that takes place in the streets of Valencia in Spain. In honour of Saint Joseph, giant paper mâché sculptures – the fallas – are constructed and then paraded through the streets, with night-time fireworks displays.
On the penultimate day of the festival – this year the 18th March – an offering of flowers is made to Our Lady of the Forsaken, the Patron Saint of València following a parade from their respective districts to the Plaza de la Virgin.
On the final day of the festival, all of the sculptures go up in flames in one spectacular finale. The falla in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the last one to burn, usually around one o’clock in the morning, accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display. This “cremà” of the city’s last falla signals the end of the festival.
As well as enjoying Las Fallas, visitors to Valencia in March can expect to enjoy warm temperatures in the region of 18˚C to 20˚C, pretty fields of fragrant almond blossom and fresh Valencian oranges, making it a great time to explore the region.
Easter in Andalucía, Easter week, 19th to 22nd April 2019
Southern Spain is renowned for its holy week celebrations and you can take your pick of parades and events through the region. The towns of Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, Huelva and Jaén all boast atmospheric parades and celebrations.
Some of the biggest parades take place in Málaga and Seville. While these cities can be difficult for motorhomers at the best of times, during these busy weeks it can be very difficult to secure yourself a camping spot. If you’ve left it too late, we recommend trying one of the smaller towns and villages – you’ll find holy week processions and events taking place over the whole of the region can be equally atmospheric.
Given the festival atmosphere, it’s a great time to visit. So your best option is to plan a route that will take you through several different locations and events so you can get a real feel for this beautiful region. And with temperatures up in the early twenties, you can enjoy some early Spanish sunshine too.
