Neighbouring the Cotswolds and just south of Warwick, Stratford is a beautiful market town, famous for being Shakespeare’s birthplace and home to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. There are plenty of cafes and eateries and you can take a romantic walk along the banks of the Avon. Stratford is ideally placed for the Cotswolds, just a ten-mile drive away.
The Cotswolds is one of the UK’s most visited areas with glorious rolling countryside and chocolate box villages. It is home to the Cotswold Hills and beautiful towns such as Stow-on-the Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water and Chipping Campden. Whilst in this area, you must visit the grass fringed street known as Broadway. Often referred to as the ‘show village of England’ this picturesque village is made up of honey stoned houses, some dating back to the 16th century.
Haworth is a pretty Yorkshire village and tourist destination with the major attractions being the heritage railway and Brontë Museum. The main street in Haworth is cobbled and there are tea rooms, bookshops, restaurants and plenty of pubs. Haworth is a perfect base for exploring Brontë Country and heading towards York, another stop for your romantic break.
For all your chocolate lovers, explore the historic Bournville village after your visit to the Cadbury World Experience. Bournville is a model village, famously associated with Cadbury’s famous plain chocolate and is known to be one of the prettiest villages in the country. The village as well as being home to Cadbury’s has a picturesque boating lake in Rowheath Park and the Bournville Rest House, a charming house built to mark the silver wedding anniversary of George Cadbury and his wife.
Edinburgh has something for everyone, with culture, shopping, scenery and the famous Edinburgh Castle. Edinburgh, although Scotland’s second largest city is quaint with its all narrow streets, quirky cafes and royal connections. Don’t forget Grassmarket, in the Old Town of Edinburgh with its pretty historic market place and plenty of pavement cafes. In the shadows of Edinburgh Castle, this is a hidden gem!
Whitby is a seaside town, famous for its established maritime heritage, Whitby Abbey, Whitby jet and most recently its status as the venue for Whitby Goth Weekend, an alternative music festival held in April and October/November. Robin Hood’s Bay, Scarborough, Staithes and Saltburn are all pretty seaside resorts that you will want to visit.
Oxford is forever associated with the olde worlde buildings of the university and the setting of Morse and known as the “city of dreaming spires”. The historic buildings make it popular with film and TV crews. Whether it’s architecture or countryside, you have it all in this beautiful city, including romantic boats trips on the Thames, strolling in one of the parks, visiting one of the cities many galleries and museums or simply wandering the meandering cobblestone streets. As you would expect in this dreamy city, there are plenty of romantic restaurants too.
